I have finally made the leap to WordPress 2.1.2 . It seems to be quite stable and provided many new features which is noteworthy, such as auto-saving. I have taken the opportunity to add more categories, plugins, tested some themes and settled down to Anaconda from Angsuman who have Simple Thoughts

Overall the feeling is great to finally achieve this update. I have worked out a simpler strategy to update WordPress. Some may not agree, but it does take away the pain of waiting for the files to be deleted from the server

Here are my simple steps

Renamed the “public_html” folder to “public_html_wpXXX” (where XXX is version) (Cpanel hosting only)

Upload the wordpress zip file.

Using File Manager, unzip the file. A directory called “wordpress” is created after unzip is complete

Rename the “wordpress” folder to “public_html”

Change the permission of this new “public_html”to 755 if your host have implemented some security feature in your hosting account (eg Zend)

Using File Manager / FTP software, copy the file .htaccess wp-config.php from “public_htmlXXX” to “public_html”.

Copy the whole “wp-content” from “public_htmlXXX” to “public_html”.

Run your upgrade script. If you don’t remember, just go try login and you will be prompted for upgrade.
Remember to DISABLE ALL PLUGIN AND download your database backup first before you attempt to do this.

Enjoy!

Do you have faint heart and stress syndrome? If yes, you might not want to upgrade to Ella yet. I have spent 6 hours trying to upgrade from WP 2.0.7 to Ella 2.1 (I got a little greedy and went ahead up to 2.1.1), but failed miserably. After more searching on the WordPress forum, I was surprised to see so many people having headaches after upgrade.

A word of warning : If you have not the time, and you just want to focus on blogging and Internet Marketing, forget about upgrading for a while. You may not want those kind of headache to get in the way. I will just keep to WP2.0.7 for now, of course if you have a new installation, it’s worth trying out. Ella does auto saving which means you have lesser risk of losing your post should your browser chooses to crash on you when you are writing your post

I have finally gather enough guts to come to this part of the task…again. I have found a larger font sized instruction manual from QuickOnlineTips to help me through this. Though I have already done 2 upgrade previous, I realized that I still did make a minor mistake. I did not delete my files when upgrading from WordPress 2.0.5 to WordPress 2.0.7 . Who knows what could have gone wrong. Thankfully, this blog is only for me and some of you who come through I don’t know where.

After reviewing the tips, I think I will do this tomorrow. It’s 2 AM already … YAWN…

I wonder if there is any emoticon (beyond the basics) for WordPress. It could really make blogging a more “chatting” experienced

This time, there isn’t an option to upgrade 2.0.7 to 2.1 by just changing a few files. How I wish this option is available this time around. They have fixed about 500 bugs

Many of these rely on keywords. Keyword research form an essential part of luring the search engine to bring traffic the website. I am installing a plugin called Another WordPress Meta Plugin (previously known as Xfish) which enables me to enter description and keyword meta tags for every post. Let’s see how that goes!

There is a HUGE demand for updating wordpress automated software. I wonder why no one decides to created one. Imagine 4 hours to upload those files, one by one via FTP (for 2 blogs). I think I rather keep up with the patch next time. If you ever skip one minor release, before, WordPress just wouldn’t tell you what files have changed in their main page, unless you go dig into the forums, the development blogs… which is very often what I try to avoid. It’s just messy.

Started blogging not very long ago. As you can see from the date, this is my third post. Few days before I setup my web site, an earthquake at Taiwan, caused the Internet backbone from Malaysia to fail. I was having a lot of difficulty accessing the website and can’t really access the Write section to post anything.

I have decided to move it to another web hosting provider. I choose a Cpanel provider, which is the same as the one having problem, and sent in a ticket to the hosting company to backup and restore my website. There is basically nothing in there, but just a WordPress 2.0.5 installation.

After a few hours, the support staff responded to me saying that it has been successful. I was happy to know that. But when I access the site, I was shocked. The website was totally not the way it should be! The WordPress was completely reinstalled (for one of my project) and wiped out (for another blog)

Thankfully I had my backup file. I opened it up to find that my database dump file was correctly backed up with all the data in there. Not sure what to do , I went on live chat with the hosting company and started asking why the data is not there. Very quickly I dropped a complaint email to the customer service department too.

Eventually the technical support on live chat and I came to discover that, my database was backed up using MySQL 4.1 , but restored to MySQL 4.0. So the end result is the database was not restored properly. Thus causing me a few hours of good sleep.

I was happy that I got this resolved today.

However… the next thing on my task list, is updating the WordPress blog to version 2.0.6. I haven’t even started the main course yet =)
